 Learning to Fly Minimize

Have you ever thought about learning to fly a glider?  It may be easier (and cheaper) than you think.  Sure, there's a level of commitment involved but earning a glider license can reward you with a lifetime of memories.  Yes, you really can soar like an eagle for hours on end!

A glider license is issued by the FAA.  Here are the basic steps to obtaining that license:

  • Start flying with an FAA licensed instructor
  • Pass a written test administered by the FAA
  • When your instructor feels you are ready, you will be approved to fly solo
  • Fly solo, practice and log time
  • When ready, your instructor will endorse you to take your final flight test
  • Pass an oral and flight test with an FAA designated examiner

Please refer to the Soaring Society of America's website for more information on the FAA requirement for obtaining a glider license

The Cleveland Soaring Society offers several paths to your glider rating

Traditional Training
As a member of the Cleveland Soaring Society, you can receive instruction from one of our FAA licensed instructors.  It will typically take a non pilot between one and two seasons to earn a glider license taking this path. Click here for more information.

Fast Track Program

The Cleveland Soaring Society has partnered with offsite glider schools to offer students an accelerated training path.  The goal of this program, called Fast Track, is to get the student to the solo stage as quickly as possible.  Quicker to solo mean quicker to license.  Once the student is cleared to fly solo, they can proceed through much of the rest of their training locally at their desired pace. Please conact Cleveland Soaring for details on this program.
